My New Video Series: ARTISTIC OSSINING!

It’s an exciting time for Arts Education in New York State. Last year the state officially adopted new learning standards for the arts, which are being implemented this year. This makes it a great time to discuss how we go about meeting those standards in our schools, as well as what the actual foundations for those standards are.

To that end, I’m creating a video series. The goal is to provide some short (2-3 min) videos to help engage parents and our community in what we do everyday. The first few episodes are going to start with looking at a key philosophical concept underpinning the new standards: Artistic Literacy. Then we’ll take a look at the standards themselves.

Here is my introductory episode. Comment and let me know what you think!

  1. Playing a musical instrument in a school orchestra or concert band does four important things for human development — (1) it develops mental response, (2) manual dexterity, (3) emotional sensitivity, and (4) fosters teamwork. In short, it develops fine, well balanced human beings.
If every child in every school played in a school orchestra or band, or sang in a school chorus, the world would be a far saner, safer place.
